Methodology

Playoff Race Games — The scores bar tracks games involving any team in the push group (BOS, CBJ, DET, NYI, OTT, PHI, PIT). NYI's game is always shown full-width at the top. Use ‹ › to navigate up to 14 days back or 3 days forward.

Projected Points — Three factors are blended:

  • Base pace — current pts ÷ GP, projected over remaining games
  • Adjusted SOS regression — if remaining schedule is harder than what a team has faced, pace regresses downward (30% weight). Uses adjusted SOS, not raw.
  • H2H penalty — inter-rival games are tighter by nature. A small drag (~0.012 pts/game per H2H remaining) is applied.

SOS# and ADJ# — Both rank all 32 teams by remaining schedule difficulty (1 = hardest, 32 = easiest).

  • SOS# — Raw rank: straight average of remaining opponents' pts%
  • ADJ# — Adjusted rank: applies a haircut (floor of 0.500 = coin flip) for opponents who are mathematically locked into their seed AND appear in your schedule during their final 2 games. A locked team may rest starters. ★ flags when a haircut was applied.

Tiebreakers — When teams finish tied on points, the NHL applies these in order:

  1. Points % — if teams played unequal games, higher pts% wins
  2. RW — Regulation Wins (no OT, no shootout) — shown in purple
  3. ROW — Regulation + OT Wins (excludes shootout wins) — shown in green
  4. W — Total wins (all methods)
  5. H2H — Points earned in games between only the tied teams
  6. DIFF — Season-long goal differential
  7. GF — Season-long goals for

▲TB / ▼TB in the race table flags who holds the tiebreaker when teams are within 1pt.

Magic Numbers — Points needed by NYI in their remaining games to exceed the projected pace of the first team outside each cutline.

Clinch Thresholds — Each card shows the projected pts of the first team outside that cutline + 1. Tap for the full breakdown including pts/game required and tiebreaker resolution when projections are tied.

Observations — Rule-based, recalculated from live standings on every page load. Covers position, schedule difficulty, H2H leverage, streak and L10 trends.

AI Butchie Bot's AI-nalysis — Powered by GPT-4o-mini. After each push group game completes, a scheduled process fetches live standings, computes all analytics context (pts, RW, ROW, adjusted SOS, projections, tiebreakers, L10, streaks, H2H remaining), and sends it to the AI. Metropolitan Push insights focus on Metro #2/#3 seeding vs PIT and the bracket implications. Wild Card Push insights focus on WC1/WC2 threats from the bubble. Insights refresh automatically within an hour of any push group game ending.

Rooting Interest — A composite threat score determines who NYI fans should root against. Factors: pts gap to NYI, projected final pts, adjusted SOS rank, games remaining, H2H games vs NYI remaining, current WC position. Tap any score card involving two push group teams for the full breakdown.
